You start out high up above the world on a superflat grass shell that extends forever. The shell has a few different layers: grass,dirt, stone and obsidian.
Existence on the superflat plane isn't impossible but it can be challenging. There are a few saplings and animals. on rare occasion you might even find a house. But if you really want to succeed, getting below the shell seems paramount.
The height of the shell varies based on the difficulty. - you also start with a bed (except on hard).
peaceful - height 90
easy - height 120
normal - height 140
hard - height 170
( also if you want a superflat area to work in in creative...well this is it.)
